Biography
Mr. Dom Benjamin Schley, age 80 of Houston, Texas formerly of Rockmart gave up the struggle with Altzheimer’s Disease when he passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2010.
Mr. Schley ws born on July 29, 1929 in Rockmart, son of the late Johnnie York Schley and the late Dom Pedro Schley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Ludie Stringer Schley.
Ben, as he was affectionately known, dedicated his young life to his Savior at the First United Methodist Church of Rockmart. He continued a lifelong membership in the United Methodist faith at various churches, always proclaiming Jesus as Lord. He developed a servant’s heart at these churches by serving in many different positions, such as Head Usher, Communion Captain, Stewardship Leader, Trustee and member of Finance Committee.
Mr. Schley’s professional career started at the Marquette Cement Plant in Rockmart, at the age of 14 when he began cleaning in the lab and continued for another 43 years, rising to the top position of Plant Manager. While employed at Marquette Cement, he interrupted his tenure by enlisting in the United States Navy, during the Korean War for four years, where he proudly served on the U.S.S. Cabot as the ship clerk. After retirement from Medusa Cement (Marquette Cement) in 1987, he worked at other cement companies at Plant Manager. He finally ended his professional career as a traveling sales representative for the cement industry in 1993.
One of his lifetime achievements was the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 14. He always told that at that time he was the youngest Eagle Scout in Georgia.
Mr. Schley’s education included graduation from Gordon Military Academy, Barnesville, GA, he attended West Georgia College, Carrollton, GA and graduated from Georgia State University with a BBA in 1957.
He resided in his hometown of Rockmart from 1929-1965 and again from 1973-1981. His life journey included many various places of residence, including Pensacola FL, Essington PA, the isle of Trinidad, Glen Ellyn IL, Ashland KY, New Castle PA, Bonita Springs Beach FL, Hiawasee GA and finally Houston TX since 1999.
Survivors include his two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna S. Silvers and her husband Dean of Houston TX and Donnette S. Samons and her husband Hezzie of Sharps Chapel TN; two grandchildren, Jillian York Samons of Georgetown KY and Benjamin Dean Silvers of Houston TX; three sisters, Mrs. Johnnie S. Forrest of Rockmart, Mrs. Martha S. Verdonck of Bluffton SC and Mrs. Judy S. Cantrell of Atlanta.
Funeral graveside and interment services for Mr. Schley will be held on Wednesday morning, July 21st at 10:30 a.m. in the family lot of Rose Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Burch Fannin officiating.
The family has requested those wishing to do so, may make a contribution to Life’s Solutions Hospice Care Inc., 8989 Westheimer, Suite 330, Houston TX 77063 in memory of Mr. Schley.
